Prostaglandin E1: Anomalous Effects on Glucose Production in Rat Liver

Prostaglandin E1 decreases the basal rate of glucose production and abolishes the increase usually caused by glucagon or cyclic 3',5'-AMP. This effect is mimicked by insulin, indomethacin, and acetylsalicylate, which also decrease prostaglandin levels. Inhibition of the synthesis of a reactive metabolic intermediate in prostaglandin biosynthesis may explain these apparently anomalous effects.
