In spite of the presence of high concentrations of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in Schistosoma mansoni, synthesis of this amine by the parasite could not be demonstrated. The worm has a high- and a low-affinity uptake mechanism (below and above 2 µM, respectively) for 5-HT. The high-affinity uptake mechanism provides the parasite with a means to obtain 5-HT, even at the low concentrations of this amine prevailing in the physiological environment of the worm.
