With this issue we begin a new year of Molecular Pharmacology. I wanted to note for readers a few changes in the journal. I am pleased to report that we have a new Associate Editor, Joel Bockaert, who is the journal's first Associate Editor to reside outside the United States. In addition, we have several new members of the Editorial Board. With the growing number of submissions in diverse areas of molecular pharmacology, it was necessary to expand the scope of expertise of Editorial Board members. One of my goals as Editor is to have at least one Perspective and Minireview in each issue (as in this issue). Feedback I have received indicates that readers find these types of articles quite informative and useful. I am pleased that Gary Johnson has agreed to serve as Minireview Editor, a position in which he will identify topics and supervise the handling of Minireviews.
The Associate Editors and I seek as rapid review as possible for manuscripts submitted to Molecular Pharmacology. This should be facilitated by an entirely electronic system of submission and review, anticipated to be fully operational early in 2004. From comments that we have received from readers and authors, this system will be a welcome improvement. In addition, the Associate Editors and I have initiated a rapid review process in order to cull out manuscripts that are not likely to compete favorably for space in the journal. Such rapid decisions allow more time for authors to select an alternate forum for presenting their findings. Each decision of this type requires input from multiple Associate Editors. Our overall objective is to make Molecular Pharmacology the most desirable venue for new work in this field. We look forward to working with authors, reviewers, and readers in achieving this goal.
