About the cover: Simultaneous monitoring of cytosolic and mitochondrial calcium transients in a cultured striatal neuron. The cell was loaded with calcium green-1N/AM to follow cytosolic calcium (diffuse green signal) and with rhod-2/AM to follow mitochondrial calcium (punctate red signal). Laser scanning confocal microscopy was used to measure changes in the two fluorescence signals after depolarization with KCl. The graph shows that with this stimulus, cytosolic calcium (green trace) rises rapidly and is followed by a latency of a few seconds caused by mitochondrial calcium accumulation (red trace). From Peng T-I, Greenamyre JT (1998) Privileged access to mitochondria of calcium influx through N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors. Mol Pharmacol 53:974-980.
