TY - JOUR T1 - Uptake of 5-Hydroxytryptamine by Schistosoma mansoni JF - Molecular Pharmacology JO - Mol Pharmacol SP - 311 LP - 319 VL - 9 IS - 3 AU - JAMES L. BENNETT AU - ERNEST BUEDING Y1 - 1973/05/01 UR - http://molpharm.aspetjournals.org/content/9/3/311.abstract N2 - In spite of the presence of high concentrations of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in Schistosoma mansoni, synthesis of this amine by the parasite could not be demonstrated. The worm has a high- and a low-affinity uptake mechanism (below and above 2 µM, respectively) for 5-HT. The high-affinity uptake mechanism provides the parasite with a means to obtain 5-HT, even at the low concentrations of this amine prevailing in the physiological environment of the worm. ACKNOWLEDGMENT We are indebted to Dr. A. H. Glässer of Farmitalia for the 8β[(carbobenzoxyamino)methyl]-1,6-dimethyl-l0α-ergotine used in this study. ER -
