That one of the products is methanol was determined by two means: (a) crystallization as [methyl]dinitrobenzoate, and (b) synthesis of 35S-labeled S-adenosylmethionine and demonstration that 35S was not incorporated into the volatile product. Highest levels of enzyme activity are found in the pituitary and hypothalamus. Other areas which contain the enzyme include brain, kidney, liver, lung, and heart. The enzyme from brain has a Km of 2.5 µM for S-adenosylmethionine. Enzyme activity is found predominantly in the supernatant fraction of brain homogenates.
