Apoptosis was determined by flow cytometric analysis of cells stained by TUNEL assay and PI incorporation as shown in Fig. 1. Values are the percentage of cells that stained TUNEL positive or with a sub-G1 DNA content. The sum of these two populations was used to determine the final percentage of apoptotic cells.

  • 1-a Cells were treated with standard growth medium alone (no treatment) or were exposed to 10 μg/ml cisplatin ± pretreatment with bFGF, as described in Materials and Methods.

  • 1-b Experiment 1 is the quantitation of apoptotic cells from the experiment illustrated in Fig. 1. Experiment 2 shows data from a separate experiment in which cells were pretreated with 20 ng/ml bFGF. In the bottom row, cells were not pretreated with bFGF, but bFGF was added simultaneously with cisplatin and maintained until the cells were harvested.
