Each value represents the mean ± S.E.M. of the sum of the areas of neovascularization on each section that included a part of the lesion. If one of the serial sections tore or was unusable, then an accurate measurement could not be obtained, and that rupture site was not included in the analysis. The investigator was masked during sectioning to eliminate any possibility of bias regarding elimination of rupture sites. P values were obtained using a linear mixed model, which adjusted for correlation in measurements from the same mouse, assuming that eyes were exchangeable. A log transformation was used for data analysis.
