Vitamin K intake and breast cancer incidence and death: results from a prospective cohort study
2021, Clinical NutritionCitation Excerpt :Among various anti-oncogenic mechanisms, previous studies centered on modulation of redox-balance and induction of oxidative stress in cancer cells due to quinone structure of vitamin K [51]. Additional mechanisms of vitamin K inducing apoptosis included alteration of intracellular calcium homeostasis and activation of the following pro-apoptotic factors: c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs), Fas-dependent and Fas-independent pathways, and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) [52–57]. Furthermore, dose-dependent growth inhibition of cancer cell lines by vitamin K2 was investigated, indicating that high doses of vitamin K2 might produce an anti-tumor response [58].
Cytotoxic effects of menadione on normal and cytochrome c-deficient yeast cells cultivated aerobically or anaerobically
2020, Biochemistry and Biophysics ReportsCitation Excerpt :This phenomenon is common to animal cells, yeast and bacteria. Targets of menadione are DNA [1,2], proteins [3,4] and lipids [5,6], which cause oxidative degradation. Menadione causes a wide range of oxidative stress and induces necrosis or apoptosis [7,8].
