Type II glucocorticoid receptors in the ovine hypothalamus: Distribution, influence of estrogen and absence of co-localization with GnRH
2002, Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :Numerous neuropeptide systems have been implicated in the regulation of GnRH secretion and it is plausible to speculate that cortisol could act on several of these systems. For example, the opioidergic system has been strongly implicated in the steroidal inhibition of GnRH release [14] and glucocorticoids increase in vitro β-endorphin expression and release in rats [43]. Moreover, circulating glucocorticoids acting through GR inhibit LH, in part, through a central action involving endogenous opioid receptors [4] and all β-endorphin neurons possess GR immunoreactivity in the rat [7].
