Abstract

A new quantitative method is described for investigating the effect of the physical and chemical environment on neuron survival in long-term culture. Dissociated nervous tissue was cultured in media containing potassium concentration ranging from 0.8 to 80.8 mm. After 11 days in culture approximately ten times as many neurons were present for 40.8 mm K+ medium as compared to the 6.8 K+ medium.
