2013, Acta HistochemicaCitation Excerpt :Increased proportions of nNOS-IR enteric neurons were previously observed in the small intestine of pigs subjected to total parenteral nutrition (Oste et al., 2005) and proliferative enteropathy (Pidsudko et al., 2008b). Also an experimental animal model (guinea-pig ileitis) of irritable bowel disorder (IBD) confirmed the role of nNOS in local tissue injury (Miller et al., 1995), although Boyer et al. (2007) were unable to localize nNOS-IR submucous neurons in pediatric patients suffering from Crohn's disease. Axotomy and/or colchicine treatment did not affect the expression of NOS in enteric neurons (Ekblad et al., 1996), whereas conditions such as Hirschsprung's disease, Chagas’ disease, diabetes or ischemia evoked a reduction of NOS-IR enteric neurons (Rivera et al., 2011).

Constitutive iNOS has been found in the GI epithelium of guinea pig and mouse ileum (Miller et al., 1995; Hoffman et al., 1997), as well as in human colon and rectum (Moochhala et al., 1996), but not in the jejunal mucosa (Hoffman et al., 1997). Thus, iNOS is expressed in the distal parts of the GI tract, where bacteria are present.
