α-Adrenoceptor subclassification by classical and response-related methods: same question, different answers

Abstract

Subclassification of α-adrenoceptors into two major subtypes — the α1 and α2 — has stood the test of time. However, in outlining the recent proliferation of further subtypes, Ian McGrath and Vince Wilson suggest that defining α-adrenoceptors according to their ‘responses’ does not give the same classification as classical ‘pharmacological’ methods. They argue for rationalization of the current diversity of classifications.
