    • Baicalein improves antioxidant status and membrane-bound enzymes during oxidative stress in benzo(a)pyrene-induced lung carcinogenesis in mice

      2012, Biomedicine and Preventive Nutrition
      Citation Excerpt :

Significant damage to DNA resulting from endogenous free radical attack has already been suggested to contribute to the pathology of cancer [8]. Any restrainment to membrane may alter the membrane-bound enzymes activities (i.e., membrane fluidity, ionic concentrations, cholesterol level and lipid peroxidation) [9] of these enzymes, bring about changes in energetic and normal homeostasis [10]. Malignant transformation of normal cell may also be accompanied by changes in the carbohydrate composition of glycoproteins in plasma membrane [11].

    • Evolution of neuronal signalling: Transmitters and receptors

2011, Autonomic Neuroscience: Basic and Clinical
      Citation Excerpt :

Possibly this is related to the nature of the receptors and the ligand–receptor interaction. If P2X are always an assembly of three subunits and the ligand binding site is the extra cellular loop between the two TM domains in each subunit, then for the receptor to function as an ion channel, three molecules of ATP are required (Bean, 1990, 1992; Roberts et al., 2006a). If there is a mutation such that ATP does not bind then the receptor would be immediately dysfunctional.
