2022, Progress in Biophysics and Molecular BiologyCitation Excerpt :Within a decade of this first cloning, entire genome sequences of eukaryotes began to appear (budding yeast, 1996; C. elegans, 1998; human, 2001–2004), and it gradually became possible to try to annotate all ion channel principal subunits related to the pseudo-tetrameric/tetrameric voltage-gated cation channels. Although electrophysiology had begun to reveal numerous channel types in the same cell (McAllister et al., 1975; Tsien et al., 1988), genomes revealed many more than any physiological studies had anticipated. A 2004 analysis identified a cation-channel superfamily of 143 relatives in the human genome, including many channels that were totally unsuspected in 1970 (Yu and Catterall, 2004).
