In general, alkaloids present a variety of biological activities such as apoptosis and NFkB signaling inhibition in macrophages (The et al., 1990; Thomas et al., 1997), anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects (Costa et al., 2008) and anti-allergic effect (Bezerra-Santos et al., 2012; Vieira et al., 2013; Ribeiro-Filho et al., 2013). Phytochemical analysis of C. sympodialis root extracts leads to isolated several alkaloids including warifteine that showed pharmacological effects such as decreasing the allergic process on the experimental model of asthma (Bezerra-Santos et al., 2006).
Tetrandrine - A molecule of wide bioactivity
2016, PhytochemistryCitation Excerpt :In spite of tetrandrine exhibiting anticancer property towards numerous cell lines, the lower bioavailability of the drug remains as a constraint. Several modifications of the drug to improve the bioavailability of tetrandrine using microspheres (Zeng et al., 1994), emulsions (Tian et al., 2005), solid lipid liposomes (Chen et al., 2010) and nanoparticles (Li et al., 2011a) were tried. It has been proved that the combination of tetrandrine with paclitaxel (Ptx) or tetrandrine-phospholipid complex in the form of nanoparticles improved the bioavailability to induce anticancer activity in rats (Li et al., 2012; Xu et al., 2014; Zhao et al., 2013a).

Several studies have shown that bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BBAs) have immunomodulatory activity against allergy and inflammation (Seow et al., 1986; Teh et al., 1990). Our group has demonstrated that the alkaloid warifteine has anti-allergic properties, including the inhibition of anaphylaxis, the inhibition of eosinophil recruitment and activation, the ability to modulate airway hyper-responsiveness and remodeling (Bezerra-Santos et al., 2005, 2006, 2012) and the ability to inhibit histamine release (Costa et al., 2008).

In previous studies, BBM has been reported to possess a multitude of pharmacological effects including antihypertensive [2,3], antiarrhythmic [4,5], myocardial preservation [6–8], anti-inflammatory [9,10], antioxidant [11,12] and immunoregulation [13–16]. In recent years, great attention has been paid to BBM for its anticancer activity [17–20], especially its anti-leukemia activity [21–25].
