However, several decades ago, presence of FSHR was identified in the bovine CL [5–7] followed by detection in the human and equine CL [8–11]. In addition, FSHR are expressed in extragonadal tissues including oviduct, uterus, and placenta in several species [12–26].

In addition, a ∼60-kDa and a ∼30-kDa (only in in vitro assays) immunoreactive bands were also detected, which would correspond to the different receptor isoforms previously described [37]. The bovine FSH-receptor cDNA was cloned and sequenced for the first time in 1994 by Houde et al. [6], who described that it is 2085 bp in length and consists of 10 exons.

There are many precedents for splice variants of the FSH-R [11–13], which in the ovary has 10 exons, nine encoding the extracellular domain and a large 10th exon with the conserved seven-transmembrane domain. FSH-R variants might signal by alternative mechanisms, including FSH-R omitting the last extracellular domain (type 2) that may represent a developmental form of the FSH-R [13], and forms with a single transmembrane domain or missing a portion of the C-terminal [11,12], although physiological functions of these alternative transcripts are not clear.
