Cholinergic modulation of circuits
2022, Neurocircuitry of AddictionTemporary inactivation of interpeduncular nucleus impairs long but not short term plasticity in the perforant-path dentate gyrus synapses in rats
2020, Behavioural Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :However, the ways that these projections terminate to either the DG granular cells or GABAergic interneurons through the excitatory/inhibitory projections still remains to be investigated. On the other hand, IPN could act on the hippocampus through several structures which are involved in the hippocampal dependent learning and memory processes and theta rhythm activity including raphe nuclei, nucleus incertus, septum and supra mammillary nucleus [21,23,24,38,39]. In Fig. 10, we proposed a diagrammatic reconstruction of these direct and indirect pathways from IPN to the hippocampus.
Reversible inactivation of interpeduncular nucleus impairs memory consolidation and retrieval but not learning in rats: A behavioral and molecular study
2018, Behavioural Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :Furthermore, some studies have proved that IPN has reciprocal connections with many structures such as raphe nuclei, laterodorsal tegmentum, and nucleus of the diagonal band, lateral septum, supramammilary nucleus and nucleus incertus. In addition, IPN has direct and indirect projections to the hippocampus which further supports the claim that IPN may have a role in cognition and behavior [4,12,26,30,48,51]. Since, an important role of hippocampal theta oscillations in memory formation has been well documented [7,15,22,24,47], the close association of IPN to structures considered to be key modulators of the hippocampal theta activity, makes it an attractive candidate involved in processes of learning and memory [26].
The habenulo-interpeduncular pathway in nicotine aversion and withdrawal
2015, NeuropharmacologyCitation Excerpt :IPN fibers targeting the raphe originate predominantly in IPR and IPDM, and to a lesser extent in IPC, IPI, and IPL. The IPN also sends projections to the forebrain, namely to the septum (Montone et al., 1988; Vertes and Fass, 1988), hypothalamus (Smith et al., 1980), entorhinal cortex and thalamus (Shibata and Suzuki, 1984) and the hippocampus (Baisden et al., 1979). Additionally, there are some reports of a minor projection of ascending fibers from the IPN along either the habenulo-interpeduncular or the mammillothalamic tract (Groenewegen et al., 1986) (Fig. 1).
Hippocampal Formation
2015, The Rat Nervous System: Fourth EditionNicotine aversion: Neurobiological mechanisms and relevance to tobacco dependence vulnerability
2014, NeuropharmacologyCitation Excerpt :The IPN has broad ascending and descending projections to various brain regions. The most prominent of these projections are the medial septum/diagonal band of Broca, hippocampus, dorsal tegmental nucleus, raphe and periaqueductal gray (Groenewegen et al., 1986; Klemm, 2004; Montone et al., 1988; Shibata and Suzuki, 1984). Many of these regions, including the diagonal band of Broca, dorsal tegmental nucleus, and raphe, send projections to the VTA (Groenewegen et al., 1986; Oades and Halliday, 1987; Phillipson, 1979; Wirtshafter, 1981).
