Treatment of hyperlipidemia in cardiac transplant recipients
2004, American Heart JournalCitation Excerpt :Compared to the in vitro data, in vivo studies have demonstrated inhibition of NK activity by statins in CT recipients but not in patients who do not undergo cardiac transplantation. Although lovastatin did not inhibit NK cells in 2 studies of patients with elevated cholesterol levels who were not undergoing cardiac transplantation,22,23 treatment with pravastatin in 20 CT recipients resulted in >50% inhibition of NK cell activity compared with placebo-treated control subjects.24 A proposed explanation for this discrepancy is that immunosupression with statins requires the presence of cyclosporine.
Anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects of statins
2003, Kidney InternationalCitation Excerpt :Clinical research has been carried out to examine the immunomodulatory effect of statins, and the results have been discordant. Muldom et al did not find any effect of six months of lovastatin on the number and function of circulating immune cells87. However, Kobashigawa et al have demonstrated that pravastatin reduces the cytotoxicity of natural killer cells and the incidence of coronary vasculopathy in patients that have undergone cardiac transplantation88.
