For example, pro-inflammatory cytokines released from activated macrophages/monocytes and T-cells induce initial events and liver damage during viral and autoimmune hepatitis (Koziel, 1999; McFarlane, 1999). Intrahepatic recruitment of macrophages/monocytes and T-cells contributes to HMGB1-induced inflammation in an HBV hepatitis model mice (Sitia et al., 2007).
