The ED50 was equal to 65 µM. The inhibitory effect was due to the binding of aurintricarboxylic acid to some membrane component necessary for the attachment of ribosomes. 1-Anilinonaphthalene-8-sulfonic acid also inhibited ribosome binding, but higher concentrations of the drug were necessary.
