2005, Biological PsychiatryCitation Excerpt :Because DOI has high affinity as an agonist for 5-HT2A receptors (Boess and Martin 1994), our data suggest that clozapine-induced activation of the MEK/ERK pathway may involve 5-HT2A receptors. The 5-HT2A receptor is known to mediate cellular functions through MEK/ERK pathway activation in a variety of tissues (Greene et al 2000; Ho et al 2001; Watts et al 2001). Stimulation of the 5-HT2A receptor by DOI increases brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the prefrontal cortex (Cavus and Duman 2003); BDNF acts through the MEK/ERK pathway to modulate activity-dependent synaptic plasticity such as LTP (Alonso et al 2002; Yamada and Nabeshima 2003).
