      The active zone is a specialized membrane domain in the presynaptic neuron and contains the molecular machinery required for calcium-dependent synaptic vesicle fusion and recycling (Scheiffele, 2003; Sudhof, 2004). The PSD and the active zone are essential components of a complex synaptic signaling assemblage and play an important role in synaptic regulation and plasticity (Klauck and Scott, 1995). Chronic morphine exposure induces changes in proteins of the PSD (Prokai et al., 2005; Li et al., 2006) and PSD thickness.
